One of the biggest challenges for someone with low vision is independence and mobility. Throughout lockdown I’ve realised that a lot of the services I use to enable my independence have become more difficult as elements like travel are minimised and restricted. Something as simple as picking up a piece of equipment is easily completed for those with access to a car and the ability to drive but as I rely on the support of taxis and public transport I’ve quickly realised that my ability to move around previously has been largely dependent on others.
As businesses shift and move to re-imagine their services in our altered environment there have been some fantastic initiative’s which have added further support to communities.
Personally, of great value for me has been 13CABS introduction of 13THINGS. A delivery service where a taxi driver will pick up an item for you and drop it off. This has been a game changer for me, making life a lot easier and stress free. On occasions where I would need to travel in the taxi to a destination to pick something up before returning home with it I can now avoid this movement completely with the convenience, secure travel also saving significant time! Most notably I have been fortunate to borrow pieces of training equipment from my rowing club Powerhouse RC throughout the lockdown but with the club 30 minutes away it was going to require extra time and effort to figure out how to get the equipment here without a car to fit it in.
Fortunately, I was able to book via the app, arrange a maxi taxi and have the driver meet our club captain, pick up the equipment and drop it off… all whilst following the driver’s movements via the app so I knew when he was about to arrive at both destinations. Talk about easy!
It’s initiatives like this that will continue to create lasting change for good. True support for the company and its employees but most importantly true support for its customer.
Thanks 13CABS, it’s a real privilege for me to work with you!
