Games greats make waves with Mick Fanning

A one-of-a-kind #GC2018 experience…

Former world surfing champion Mick Fanning has taught some Commonwealth Games legends the art of catching waves at Kirra Beach.

Despite missing out in his final competition at Bells Beach earlier this month, the surfing icon was happy to pass on his experience to Anna Meares, Jessica Gallagher and Chad le Clos.South African Le Clos took home five medals including three gold in a typically strong swimming meet, but had hoped for a record medal haul, falling just short of the all-time record of 18 medals held jointly by shooters Phillip Adams and Mick Gault. Former world and Olympic track cyclist Anna Meares has so many accomplishments to her name. The GC2018 competition at the Anna Meares velodrome has finished, and the only record not broken on the track was the 500m women’s time trial, ironically the record Meares set in Glasgow. Cyclist Jessica Gallagher came second in both of her women’s B&VI events.

“It’s heartbreaking. We competed in the world championships (UCI Paracycling Track World Championships) a few weeks ago and won two silvers,” she said.

“But we proved at the world champs we’re the second best team in the world. And we proved that again here. It’s not about trinkets, it’s about doing the best for your country.”
