Women’s Health Women in Sport Awards
Without doubt this is my favourite event of the year celebrating the incredible achievements of Australia’s female athletes over the past 12 months!
I distinctly recall the very first event back in 2011 when then editor Felicity Harley begun her opening speech sharing a story of a women who had succeeded that until recently she had never heard of. As she started revealing facts about this women I suddenly realised… it was me! She was sharing my story and my Paralympic medal at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Paralympics where I became the first Australian women to medal at a winter Paralympics, 50 years after our first winter medal for a male. I sat there gobsmacked! I also remember one of her women in sport facts, that the female athlete who had received the most coverage that year was in fact a horse!
As I reflect on the past 7 years boy has women’s sport come a long way and at this year’s awards it is about to take an even greater leap forward when for the first time ever Channel 7 would broadcast the evening and allow all Australian’s the ability to celebrate our women in sport.
As always it was a fun, inspiring evening peppered with interviews with women from across all sporting codes sharing insights into their world. Channel 7 are showing this event in a one hour special to air October 28 so be sure to keep an eye out… you might even spot me in one of the interviews!
Here’s to the continued growth and coverage of our amazing WINS!
