World Championships bound… as a track cyclist!

  • January 12, 2016

It is incredibly exciting to share the news that along with my pilot Maddi we have officially been selected for the Australian Para-Cycling team bound for the UCI World Championships to be held in Italy this March 17-20.

Having decided to take up cycling for the first time in September 2014, it has been a fantastic journey and one that has been enjoyable every minute. Along the way I have been incredibly fortunate to make a lot of new friends who have helped me make the Aussie team. As we enter a new year, I reflect back over the period since September 2014 and know that without their friendship, support and guidance, the transition to cycling would not have been as quick or successful as it has been and I would like to acknowledge a few of them.

To John, Gary and the Beasley Cycles crew. From day one you have all helped me, given me advice whether it be learning to ride a bike safely by myself to laughing with me when I didn’t see a footpath turn a corner consequently leaving me riding onto the beach getting myself bogged in the sand (thanks for cleaning the sand off my bike too) to helping me have a custom tandem built. How lucky am I that after years of walking past the store I finally went in and found some new friends who happen to know a little bit about cycling. 🙂

To the beautiful Jessica Allen, my first pilot. Thank you for teaching me how to ride a tandem and starting this journey with me. I’m sorry I wasn’t able to turn myself into an enduro trackie or roadie like you! I’m so excited to watch your career progress and the amazing things you’ll achieve on and off the bike.

To my coach, for spotting me in the gym lifting weights and asking if I’d like to try the tandem… I think it worked out ok! Thank you for introducing me to this sport and giving me the skills and knowledge to progress to my first Aussie selection.

To Marty at Elite Sports Performance. Thank you for transforming my body into a track cyclist’s. Your passion for strength and conditioning and your athletes is contagious and I love walking into the gym every day knowing you will teach me something I never knew.

And finally to Maddi. My sincerest appreciation for taking a chance on an opportunity with me, for re-locating to Melbourne and believing in our dream to represent Australia in Rio. For putting in the hard work, the sacrifices and challenges that come when embarking on achieving something magical. I’m so excited for what 2016 will bring and the journey we will share together.

There are many more people I could thank, family, friends, sponsors and supporters. So many people have helped me along the way, and I can’t wait to share the future as a cyclist this year with you all!

Here’s to many hours on the bike and many more laughs to go along with it!

I’m really proud to have been re-elected to the I’m really proud to have been re-elected to the @vision2020aus Board for my third term. Thank you to our member organisations who continue to trust in me and my passion for the eye health and vision care sector. I truly value the opportunity I have to help shape our sector for the benefit to those of us who live it. A special mention and thanks must go to our outgoing Chair, the Hon Amanda Vanstone AO. It’s been a privilege working with and learning from her these past 6 years. She has the most wonderful stories that I’m really going to miss listening to! We are very fortunate to be welcoming our newly elected Chair, the Hon Christopher Pyne (@pynechristopher) to Vision 2020 alongside Directors Associate Professor Heather Mack, Jane Schuller and Shaun Tatipata. I’m very excited to have these incredible people join the Board. We’ve achieved a significant amount in the organisations 20 years but there is plenty left to do!

Instead of posting a boring Board photo 😂 here’s some images from when I travelled to Vietnam in 2012 to see firsthand the impact of the work of Vision 2020 Australia and its members. It was a life changing trip. These are the moments I got to witness a young girl, with avoidable low vision see clearly for the first time as she was given a pair of glasses that her single Father could not afford. They cost AUD$10. I’ll never forget the moment she put the glasses on, stepped outside to look at a tree and realise that she could see it. I was bawling my eyes out watching it and then I turned around and saw her Father’s face and his smile. His little girl could see. 😭💕 That smile will never leave my heart. The gratitude. The love. Everyone in the room's life changed that day. Everyone has the right to sight. ❤

@13cabs have been a long time sponsor of mine & I @13cabs have been a long time sponsor of mine & I wanted to share this little graph I saw because even as a frequent customer of taxis I was completely unaware of the differences between providers when it comes to food delivery. I was super impressed to learn that they don't charge 30% commission to restaurants & cafes like others do meaning that money stays in the pockets of local business. Brilliant! ❤ #13things
