World Championships bound… as a track cyclist!

  • January 12, 2016

It is incredibly exciting to share the news that along with my pilot Maddi we have officially been selected for the Australian Para-Cycling team bound for the UCI World Championships to be held in Italy this March 17-20.

Having decided to take up cycling for the first time in September 2014, it has been a fantastic journey and one that has been enjoyable every minute. Along the way I have been incredibly fortunate to make a lot of new friends who have helped me make the Aussie team. As we enter a new year, I reflect back over the period since September 2014 and know that without their friendship, support and guidance, the transition to cycling would not have been as quick or successful as it has been and I would like to acknowledge a few of them.

To John, Gary and the Beasley Cycles crew. From day one you have all helped me, given me advice whether it be learning to ride a bike safely by myself to laughing with me when I didn’t see a footpath turn a corner consequently leaving me riding onto the beach getting myself bogged in the sand (thanks for cleaning the sand off my bike too) to helping me have a custom tandem built. How lucky am I that after years of walking past the store I finally went in and found some new friends who happen to know a little bit about cycling. 🙂

To the beautiful Jessica Allen, my first pilot. Thank you for teaching me how to ride a tandem and starting this journey with me. I’m sorry I wasn’t able to turn myself into an enduro trackie or roadie like you! I’m so excited to watch your career progress and the amazing things you’ll achieve on and off the bike.

To my coach, for spotting me in the gym lifting weights and asking if I’d like to try the tandem… I think it worked out ok! Thank you for introducing me to this sport and giving me the skills and knowledge to progress to my first Aussie selection.

To Marty at Elite Sports Performance. Thank you for transforming my body into a track cyclist’s. Your passion for strength and conditioning and your athletes is contagious and I love walking into the gym every day knowing you will teach me something I never knew.

And finally to Maddi. My sincerest appreciation for taking a chance on an opportunity with me, for re-locating to Melbourne and believing in our dream to represent Australia in Rio. For putting in the hard work, the sacrifices and challenges that come when embarking on achieving something magical. I’m so excited for what 2016 will bring and the journey we will share together.

There are many more people I could thank, family, friends, sponsors and supporters. So many people have helped me along the way, and I can’t wait to share the future as a cyclist this year with you all!

Here’s to many hours on the bike and many more laughs to go along with it!

Last year during lockdown I passed the 10 year ann Last year during lockdown I passed the 10 year anniversary of being a @visionaustralia ambassador. An organisation I'm incredibly passionate about after receing support from them as a 17 year old recently diagnosed as legally blind. There is no overstating the fact that their support is life changing for so many & it's a privilege for me to be able to support others living life with low vision & blindness. Thanks to Ron & the team for my plaque & here's to the next 10 years! (well 9 now 😂)

We have created curated eBike tours that celebrate what #Melbourne is most famous for - sport, food, coffee, while being immersed in its cultural diversity.

I'm beyond excited to partner with @boschebikesystems @boschaustralia @lugandcarrie and @rapha_australia. We are offering the community the opportunity to feel the flow of the city with an exciting guided eBike tour experience. I will be hosting the Sport eBike tour & @marco_lori hosting the food tour!

Unfortunatrly the tours sold out within a couple of hours BUT the tours will be available as self guided tours so everyone can cruise our beautiful city!

I've been OBSESSED with my ebike & zipping around on it. It's such a fun way to get around & the perfect way to see the city (& go up hills 🤣) If you're looking for a fun day out this is the perfect activity!

It's hard to put into words just how special last It's hard to put into words just how special last night was. ❤

It still feels like a dream that my story inspired a writer & director from the #MelbourneWritersTheatre to create a play, especially as a big fan of theatre.

The Best. The Fairest. The First shared the stories of inspiring Aussie sportswoman from the first women to compete in Swimming at the Olympics in 1912 Fanny Durack & Mina Wylie, cricket legend Betty Wilson in the 1950's, marathon runner Sinbad Diver & myself. Each with such unique stories yet so many themes threading the stories together. It was very surreal seeing my story come to life at @gasworksartspark

Last nights closing show was hugely emotional as I sat on stage post show for a Q&A getting to speak about the power of our Aussie sportswoman & the sharing of their incredible stories. So many stories people need to hear.

I can't wait to receive some photos of the evening & share some particularly special moments we had but for now hear is one of writer Clare & I deep in conversation reflecting on the creation of the show.
